How Often Should You Wash Your T-Shirts?

You’ve probably heard that you should wash your fave pair of jeans every four or five wears to preserve the feel and look. But did you know that the same ‘rule’ also applies to t-shirts? In addition to preventing the dye from fading and causing shrinkage, there’s another reason why you should wash your tees ‘every so often.’

Scientists and manufacturers have recently revealed that more than 700,000 synthetic microplastics enter our waterways from just one load of washing. More specifically, most of the plastic came from fibres, especially nylon, polyester and acrylic. The solution? Choose cotton and wash less.

At ByBel, all of our t-shirts are ethically produced and made from 100% Australian-grown cotton. If you’re wearing your tees every day, you’ll no doubt want to make sure you’re getting the most out of them. One of the easiest ways to lengthen the life of your tees is to wash them correctly.

THE ‘RIGHT’ WAY TO WASH YOUR GRAPHIC TEES

While it’s absolutely fine to throw your tees in the washing machine (because who really has the time to hand-wash all their clothes?) it’s a good idea to take some extra precautions to make sure your t-shirts stay in mint condition. In addition to a friendly reminder to separate the whites from the colours, here’s some life hacks on how to preserve your fave ByBel tee.

1. TURN YOUR TEES INSIDE OUT

In the washing machine, your tee will face friction during the wash cycle. By turning your tees inside out, you’ll help preserve its graphic art and prevent the colours from fading.

2. WASH WITH COLD WATER

You always want to wash your tees in cold water, or warm water. Anything is better than hot water, as the heat can be quite harsh on the fabric.

3. CHOOSE THE GENTLE CYCLE SETTING

Preserve the softness of your cotton By Bel tees by putting them in the washing machine at the gentlest cycle setting. This prevents shrinkage as well as reduces the amount of friction that comes from the spin cycle.

4. HANG YOUR T-SHIRTS TO DRY

Rather than placing them in the dryer, just hang them over a drying rack or on the clothesline (but don’t hang them in direct sunlight). This not only prevents shrinkage but uses less energy. If you find your t-shirt is stiff after being air dried, toss them into the dryer on a low heat setting to avoid shrinkage.

5. ALTERNATE BETWEEN YOUR TEES

Have a By Bel t-shirt that you love? Instead of wearing it every day, why not alternate between the rest of our collection? From our popular ‘Blink’ unisex tee to our Baby Purse design, not only will you have a fresh wardrobe of cool pieces to wear, but you’ll also be supporting a local artist.

If you’re ever unsure how to wash your graphic tees, read the laundry tag to ensure your By Bel tee lasts a long time.

I’ve fused my love of art with fashion and sustainability to create clothes that reflect my personality and values as an artist. My collection of printed unisex tees is inspired from the heart – and my imagination. Thanks for letting me share my vision with you.
